In this tutorial, we're going to do a simple step-by-step guide of the process on how to book driving test appointments for your practical UK driving test.
So, the big day has come. You finally feel that you’re ready to take your test. So lets book it. Uhm… wait… How? Where?
Firstly, make sure you have your provisional driving licence, your driving instructor’s ADI number (optional) and your credit or debit card. Now head over to www.gov.uk/book-driving-test. You should see a website similar to the one in the screenshot below. Click the green 'Start now' button to proceed to the next step.
Now you have four options. Car (manual or automatic), Car or trailer, Motorcycle or Other. In this instance, you are trying to book driving test appointments for a standard test, therefore you should pick “Car (manual or automatic)”.
At this stage, your provisional will come in handy. You need to enter your licence number, this should be 16 characters long. Quite a lot of people make the mistake of adding an extra two numbers at the end, don’t do this – only add the first 16 characters.
After that, it asks you if you have been ordered to take an extended test by the courts. If you haven't been ordered to take an extended test, click 'no'.
Now they ask if you have any special requirements. If you have any disabilities which you'd like the DVSA to know about, let them be known here. When you've done all on the above, click "continue".
On this page, you need to request an ideal time and date for when you'd like to book your driving test. Also, you have the option to add your instructor's ADI number - this makes it so no conflicting tests will come up if your instructor is already busy with another student.
Do you need a test within the next few weeks?
Here, you need to pick which driving test centre you would like to book driving test appointments at. You can fill in the field with the name of your location or alternatively you can use your postcode.
Step 6Now you will see a calendar like web page to book driving test appointments. This calendar will contain available and unavailable dates. Click on a date which suits your requirements, then times on that day will pop up below. Click the relevant time, and click "continue".
The next page is very clear in instruction. Just fill out your first name, last name, address and town and press continue. The next page will be the payment page - when you have paid, the process is over. The DVSA should send you an email at within a couple of minutes with a confirmation email.
Is there any other ways to book driving tests?
You can book driving tests via the telephone, simply call the DVSA on: 0300 200 1122. It should be noted that it's a robot on the phone, but, you can request to speak to human if you wish. This line is open from 8am to 12pm. Personally, I think booking online is the best option - you can do it in your own time, at your own pace and you aren't put on the spot in regards to picking which date would be the best for you. Just be prepared, and follow the tutorial step by step and you will be fine.
