What does the "Tram Crossing Ahead" sign mean?

This road sign is used to notify motorists that there is a tram crossing directly ahead. These tram crossings don't usually have barriers either so it's very important that drivers take extra care before and when crossing. Unlike trains, trams aren't anywhere near as fast so you have a lot more time to react and make your decision however if you see a tram coming, you should prepare to stop and wait for it to pass. Due to being much slower than trains, tram drivers can also stop the tram very quickly if they believe a collision may occur.

How common is this sign?

This road sign will be common to some, but very rare for others. Typically, trams will only be found in bigger cities such as London, Manchester and Liverpool. There are said to be over 400 tram crossings in the UK, however most of them are located in the bigger cities.

If you live in a rural town or village, or even a small or medium-sized city, you likely don't have a tram service running, therefore you won't see this sign unless you travel.

Where are you likely to see the "Tram Crossing Ahead" sign?

As previously stated, this road sign is only really seen in bigger cities such as London, Manchester and Liverpool, but is not limited to. For most individuals, you will not need to worry much about this sign but it's worth knowing about it in case you're to travel to somewhere with a tram service in place.

When did this sign first come into action?

The tram crossing ahead sign became official in the UK in 2004. However, it is common to see crossing ahead signs of other colors in central London and the area under London Transport or British Railways.

Trams themselves have been around for a very long time, but they were not as developed as they are today.

Is this sign dangerous?

No. This sign is not dangerous but you have to be careful while crossing the rails on your tram-only level crossing because of the tram may be approaching at a decently high speed. It's not good to trample the rails on your way across.

Why is so important?

  1. A motorist needs to be aware of and obey the signs. Do not park or drive in the vicinity of rail tracks, and do not drive over the tram lines when one is incoming.
  2. It is also important for pedestrians to take care and remember that they should not cross the track without looking first.
  3. Tram operators need to ensure that the warning signs are maintained and clean, as well as to ensure that the lights are working properly.

Why do I need to know this?

To be able to drive safely and move around in your daily life. Driving near tram tracks is dangerous and may lead to an accident. If you always remember this sign and cross tracks at crossings ahead of time, you will have no problem crossing tracks in the future too.
